This brass/bronze paperweight was a bit of a mystery to us before the wonders of Google as it has the following limited information:
Our brief search showed that in 1842 the Glasgow Queens Street to Cowlairs rail line opened and carriages # were pulled up what was a steep incline from Queen Street station to Cowlairs. This was done by steam train or incline engine, using a rope tied to the carriages initially and subsequently a wire rope.
This arrangement came to an end in 1908 when new more powerful trains could pull the carriages without the need for an incline engine.
