BOOK: Fiords of Norway a cruise on the SS Ophir by Heywood Hadfield
This large size vintage hardback edition entitled “With an Ocean Liner (Orient Co’s S.S. “Ophir”) Through the Fiords of Norway,” and subtitled “A Photographic Memento of a Fortnight’s Cruising,” by P. Heywood Hadfield, illustrated with numerous tissue-guarded fine quality photographic plates, including a FULL PAGE frontispiece depicting the “Ophir” at Gudvangen in the Naero Fiord and a FULL PAGE COLOUR map of Norway.
The book was printed and published by The London Stereoscopic & Photographic Co., Ltd., of Regent Street, London, and is the 6th edition, undated but dates to the early 1900’s.
RMS Ophir was a twin-screw ocean liner of the Orient Steam Navigation Company of London. In 1901 she served as the Royal yacht HMS Ophir. This book is post her time as Royal yacht, and pre First World War
In 1915 she was requisitioned by the Admiralty and was an armed merchant cruiser until 1918, when she was returned to her owners. She was not restored to passenger service and was scrapped in 1922.
The book measures ca 35cms by 21 and is in overall very good condition for its age. There is rubbing to the external covers especially down the spine where the bottom third is missing....see final pic. Internally there is general light browning/foxing to most pages though this has not affected the photo plates. There are no loose or missing pages.
A wonderfully illustrated vintage edition.
