Early 20th C. Scottish Highland Games print featuring highland dancers in superb carved frame
This early 20th century print dates from the World War 1 period and shows male highlander dancers performing at a Scottish highland games, probably the Braemar Gathering. In the background of the print are the spectators some of whom are dressed in military uniform and beyond that are trees and hills.
The print is unsigned, has a few knocks, is a bit dirty in places and has a piece missing from the top right corner. These issues dont seem to detract from the detail on the print which is quite stunning as the pics show.
The patinated wooden frame of the print is superb with crossover corners and carved and painted decoration, typical of early good quality Scottish craftsmanship.
I took this picture to the Antiques Road Show at Balmoral last year and Hilary Kay the expert loved the frame and was interested in the fact that the highland dancers were all male.
One of those pictures where you keep finding something new to look at.
