Collecting The World

Unearthed recently from a ships candlers shed in Macduff we were not sure what this item was used for.

We have now ascertained that this is an early 20th century foghorn which is operated by pumping the cylinder and forcing air through a reed and into the horn.

Foghorn is about 60cms tall and made of painted steel with A88 stencilled on the side.

The horn reed needs some adjustment as sound is more like heavy breathing rather than a loud warning sound.

The horn would probably have been used by a harbour watchman, maybe in Macduff or another local harbour and is an interesting piece of local history....and ideal for holding your walking stick or brolly.

Antiques, collectables, vintage, you will find them all at COLLECTING THE WORLD.
