Pair early 20th C. Irish hand forged wrought iron fire dogs or andirons by J BREEN LEIXLIP CO. KILDARE
An interesting and unusual pair of early 20th century Irish made wrought iron fire dogs or andirons stamped on the underside with the makers name J BREEN LEIXLIP, CO. KILDARE.
So far I have been unable to find any info on Mr Breen, so am not sure if he was a local blacksmith who made these as a novelty or he specialised in making more unusual and decorative items in cast iron.
These hand forged andirons or fire dogs are in excellent original nicely patinated condition and retain what looks to have been their original painted finish.
The makers name and address is stamped on the underside of the body.
The dogs look to have been made to look like beagles and have nicely modeled long ears and upright tail.
These would look great in an old fireplace either just for decoration or for displaying fireside utensils.
