Very large Measham Pottery barge ware teapot inscribed Borough of Grampound 1797
This exceptionally large Measham barge ware teapot is 40cms or just about 16 inches tall and is inscribed BOROUGH OF GRAMPOUND 1797. Shown alonside the teapot is a normal sized half cup which gives an idea of the size of the teapot
Measham pottery in Leicestershire started being produced in the 1870s so the date on the teapot does not reflect when the teapot was made and may refer to e.g. a centenary for the Borough of Grampound, a village in Cornwall. The teapot was probably made in the last quarter of the 19th century.
This pear shaped teapot is a superb example of Measham Pottery and the bright treacle glaze has applied and painted birds, baskets of flowers, single flowers and a small teapot shaped finial.
This exceptional teapot is in superb condition and has no cracks or damage that I can see other than a small chips to the base of the teapot finial....see pics.
